This conversation on artificial intelligence was tailored for election practitioners and administrators. Using the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) as our guide, we focused specifically on the Map phase.

The Map function is about understanding your context: identifying where AI is being used, what risks it introduces, and who might be affected.

Among the discussion points:

  • Where is AI showing up? How to take stock of the AI tools already in use across your office, even ones you may not have formally approved.

  • What could go wrong? A practical approach to identifying and categorizing the risks specific to your workflows and the communities you serve.

  • Who is affected? Thinking beyond your office to understand how AI decisions can impact voters, staff, and election integrity.

This was a grounded, jargon-free conversation about knowing your environment before making decisions. This was the second of a four-part series breaking down the NIST AI RMF: Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage.
