The Map

This tracker is about election administration: how elections are run, and the officials, offices, voters and systems that make them work. It is not about political campaigns. Each story here is a U.S. news report about AI touching that work: deepfakes aimed at voters or election offices, chatbots giving voters wrong answers, new state laws, election offices testing AI tools, and more. A few stories involve candidates, campaigns or political ads, mostly where they affect what voters hear about how to vote or how election offices respond. Most come from electionline's daily roundup of election news. Pick a year, then select a state to see its stories. Stories about more than one state, or about federal action, are counted as national.

This is just the start

For now, the tracker draws on one trusted source, electionline's daily news roundup, plus stories readers send us. We plan to expand it to include more sources and more kinds of content. Have an idea, or want to collaborate? Email us at [email protected].

      How It Works

Every weekday, electionline publishes a roundup of election news from across the country, sorted by state. We collected every headline from those roundups since January 2023, more than 48,000 stories, and kept the ones whose headlines mention AI or a closely related term, such as deepfakes, chatbots, artificial intelligence, or generative AI. Then we read the list by hand and removed stories that matched a term but weren't about AI, like ordinary robocall schemes.

This approach has limits. It only sees headlines, so a story about AI under a headline like "New law targets election misinformation" isn't counted. And it reflects what reporters covered and what electionline linked, not everything that happened. Some calls about what counts as an AI story were judgment calls, and a full-text review of every article would likely add more. The tracker is meant to show a trend. It covers how often AI appears in electionline's headlines. It doesn't cover all reporting on AI and elections, or measure AI's actual impact on elections.

We update the tracker every week as new stories come in, and we plan to add more sources over time. If you have ideas for what it should include, or would like to collaborate, email [email protected]. For what the numbers show so far, read AI is in the election administration headlines less. That doesn't mean it matters less.

      Submit a Story

Know of a U.S. news story about AI touching election administration that isn't here? Send it in. We read every submission and add stories that fit: U.S.-based, about how elections are run, and about AI. Stories about campaigns, candidates or political ads on their own are outside the tracker's focus. Local news, official announcements, and court filings all count.

This opens an email to us with your story filled in. Nothing is sent until you send that email.

      About This Tracker

The tracker lists U.S. news stories about AI and election administration that electionline linked in its daily news roundup, plus stories readers send us. Stories are matched by headline, so it shows what made the news, not every way AI touches elections.

We update it regularly. To read how it was built and what the numbers show so far, see our commentary piece on AI in the election news.
